I used Shift_JIS as it has the most readable results in Radio, I had not tested in manila at that stage. I also looked at some of the larger Japanese sites, newspapers, sony etc Shift_JIS does appear to be the more commonly used charset, others i came across were content="text/html;charset=x-sjis" and content="text/html; charset=euc-jp" >

Frontier has a table at prefs.iso8859 this may be where I can specify default charset for frontier, but not game enough to try :)

BTW do you know of any newsfeeds In japanese (rss or any manila compatible) , i would like to try them out on my japanese weblog
